This area is on the border between Lunigiana and Garfagnana in the Tuscan hills with a nearby lake and with trails into the mountains. Lago Gramolazzo is particularly beautiful and offers a number of activities. The area is famous for the stone statues which date back to the Neolithic age and are thought to be gifts to the moon Goddess. Garfagnana is the valley which stretches west from Lucca along the Serchio valley to the hills on the northern tip where it borders with Lunigiana. It is characterised by hilltop villages and small towns with cobbled piazzas. The hills on either side of the river rise steeply and are flanked with dense woodlands, scattered farms, rivers and streams. The hilltop villages offer splendid views across the valley. The largest towns in the region are Barga and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana with picturesque medieval town centres, restaurants, shops and supermarkets. Barga higher in the hills is dominated by the ancient cathedral and has a famous theatre house. The villages offer breathtaking views, traditional restaurants, orchards and vineyards.
